Why is Dental Treatment Expensive? The Hidden Costs of Quality Care
A common question patients ask is, "Why does dental treatment cost so much?" It is a valid question, but providing safe, premium dental care involves far more than just a doctor's time.
In a modern dental practice, almost everything used during a procedure — aside from the air, electricity, and water — is imported from countries like Japan, Germany, the USA, South Korea, and India.
1. Premium Imported Materials
Many patients assume a dental filling is a simple, cheap paste. In reality, a premium Japanese composite filling (just 3-4 grams) can cost upwards of 10,000 BDT.
Furthermore, placing that filling is a highly technical, multi-step process:
- Etching: A specialized gel (costing 2,000-3,000 BDT per 5ml) is applied to prepare the tooth surface.
- Bonding Agent: A high-grade medical adhesive (costing 8,000-10,000 BDT for just 2-3ml) is applied so the filling stays in place.
- Curing: A specialized machine emitting a specific wavelength of blue light is required to harden the materials.
2. Single-Use Instruments and Strict Sterilization
A significant portion of dental equipment is strictly single-use. If your treatment requires six visits, we must use brand-new, imported disposable materials six times to guarantee your safety.
For instruments that are reusable, they must undergo 100% sterilization. We use a high-end sterilizer (Autoclave) that costs around 1.5 Lakh BDT. This machine cannot even run on normal tap water — it requires purchased, medical-grade distilled water.
3. Complex Procedures and Operational Costs
A standard Root Canal Treatment requires 7 to 8 different types of specialized medicines and micro-instruments. These delicate foreign instruments undergo wear and tear and frequently need replacing.
Additionally, running a clinical environment involves standard overhead: staff salaries, electricity, and specialized medical waste disposal fees mandated by the City Corporation.
The Deadly Reality of "Cheap" Dental Care
The dark reality of cheap dental care is the use of counterfeit, low-grade materials and the dangerous reuse of unsterilized items. Reusing needles, gloves, or unsterilized metal instruments directly exposes you to life-threatening bloodborne diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS.
The cheap treatment you pay for today could cost you your health — or your life — tomorrow.
Conclusion: Value Your Health
Do not compromise when it comes to your health. Always seek treatment from a qualified professional. Remember, there is no legally recognized dental degree other than a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), and anyone practicing without a BDS is not a qualified dental surgeon.
